Who writes the articles

Articles are written by one anonymous author and carry the byline “the Tinder & Fern editor.” The author has years of hands-on wilderness instruction across all seasons and an advanced background in the life sciences. The author’s name is not published.

What the articles cover

Each article teaches one wilderness skill and sets out the steps in the order a beginner would learn them. Articles are educational and do not replace training from a qualified instructor, advice from a local expert, or the current rules of the land you are visiting.

How products are chosen

A product appears in an article when it fits the skill the article teaches. Commission rate does not decide what gets recommended. When a product is sold both on Amazon and direct from the maker, a link goes to the maker when its commission and the buyer’s price are both better.

How prices and specifications are checked

Prices shown as “Around $XX” are checked against the current retailer listing before an article publishes. Weights, capacities and other specifications come from the manufacturer’s or retailer’s listing for the exact model linked.

Affiliate links

Tinder & Fern earns a commission on purchases made through some links, at no extra cost to the buyer. Links are routed through Geniuslink, and the programs in use are Amazon Associates and Awin. The Affiliate Disclosure has the full statement.
